Statement
My art is an enigma... even to me. This fact is both an intended yet somehow unexpected result of effort which is motivated by three recurring and interactive forces. These are: my passion for manipulating materials; my visceral reaction to the interiors of derelict objects and structures; and, a continuing search for my own inner person through the act of art making. This combination provides both direction and surprise.
I like to capture images of the objective world through sketches and photos and then reclaim them in my studio as a starter for the painting. Through the physical labor of drawing, painting and scraping, guided sometimes by instinct and sometimes by rigorous plan, I seek unexpected discoveries... mindscapes with their own psychological and emotional geography. The dark tactile surfaces perhaps suggest a melancholy, sometimes ambiguous, vision a vision replete with tension between paint and form; intuition and rationality; growth and decay.
And after all, these tensions reflect the reality of a physical and psychological world which always changes, endures, and in turn rejuvenates through inner constancy and peripheral flux; a world where we must all survive as best we can. Sometimes by making art.
